Located in Chatham County, Georgia, Savannah is the county seat with a population exceeding 304,000.
Savannah prides itself as the "Hostess City of the South" and is internationally known for it's atchetecture and history. Housing the most valuable 18th and 19th century archetecture, Savannah attracts millions of visitors each year. The Downtown Historical Landmark District is the largest in the entire United States.
On February 12, 1733, General James Ogalthorpe landed on Yamacraw Bluff along with 114 colonists on the ship "Anne" and were greated by Tomochichi, the leader of the Yamacraws and John and Mary Musgrove, Indian traders. The city of Savannah was founded on that date, along with the colony of Georgia.
In 1864 Savannah was surrendered to Union general Sherman rather than to see it tourched. Following World War 1 and the decline of the cotton market, the city's economy colapsed and it's historical buildings fell subject to 30 years of neglect. Abandoned riverfront warehouses laid empty and delapetated from the once abundant and extreamely profitable cotton trade.
In 1955 news that the Isaiah Davenport House at 324 East State Street was to be demolished.
Seven outraged ladies began to raise the money needed to purchase the house and they saved it the day before the
wrecking ball was scheduled to make the fatal swing. The house was now to be the home of the Historic Savannah
Foundation, the organization responsible for the restoration of downtown Savannah and more than 1,000 buildings
within the 2 1/2 square mile Historic District. Today Savannah is one of the top 10 cities for walking tours.
